Nitrates (NO₃⁻) are the final byproduct of the nitrogen cycle. They are produced by beneficial nitrifying bacteria (such as Nitrospira and Nitrobacter) that convert nitrites into this less immediately toxic compound — this process is where the term “nitrification” comes from. They also accumulate from the ongoing breakdown of organic matter: uneaten food, fish waste, and decaying plant material.

Why nitrates are a problem

While nitrates are far less immediately toxic than ammonia or nitrite, elevated levels create chronic stress that weakens immune function and leaves fish vulnerable to disease outbreaks, bacterial infections, and parasites. High nitrates are also a primary driver of nuisance algae growth, since algae readily consume nitrates as a nutrient source.

Keeping nitrates under control

Because nitrates build up continuously, unlike ammonia and nitrite which a healthy biofilter processes and removes, staying on top of nitrate levels is important. Regular water changes are the most reliable method for keeping levels in check. Live plants can help by consuming nitrates as nutrients, and certain specialized filter media can reduce them by supporting bacteria that break nitrates down further. That said, water changes remain the most effective tool for managing nitrates in most aquariums.

Testing and target levels

Testing nitrate levels monthly is a good starting point for established tanks, but more frequent monitoring is recommended when breeding fish or raising fry (juvenile fish). Juvenile fish are significantly more sensitive to nitrate toxicity than adults, making low, stable levels especially important during early life stages. As a general target, keep nitrates below 20 ppm for most freshwater fish and below 10 ppm for sensitive species, saltwater tanks, and breeding setups.
