The pH scale measures how acidic or alkaline your aquarium water is. The term stands for “Power of Hydrogen” — a reference to the concentration of hydrogen ions in the water, which determines where it falls on the scale. The scale runs from 0 to 14. A pH of 7.0 is neutral. Below 7.0 is acidic, above 7.0 is alkaline (also called basic). The further from 7.0 in either direction, the more extreme the condition.

One important thing to understand: the pH scale is logarithmic, not linear. Each whole number step represents a tenfold change in acidity or alkalinity. Water with a pH of 6.0 is ten times more acidic than water with a pH of 7.0, and one hundred times more acidic than water with a pH of 8.0. Small shifts that look minor by number can represent significant changes in water chemistry.

Why pH matters in an aquarium

More than any other parameter, pH has a broad influence on fish health and water chemistry. It affects the toxicity of ammonia — the more toxic NH₃ form increases as pH rises. It influences how efficiently your biological filter functions, how well fish regulate their internal chemistry, and how easily disease sets in. Stable pH, in the right range for your fish, is one of the most important factors in a healthy tank.

Sudden swings are often more dangerous than a pH that is slightly outside the ideal range. Fish can acclimate gradually to an imperfect pH, but a rapid shift — even toward a more favorable value — can cause osmotic shock and death.

pH ranges for common aquarium fish

Most community freshwater fish and plants do best between 6.8 and 7.4, though fish can survive across a fairly wide range. Different species have different preferences:

  • Acidic water (below 7.0) — tetras, discus, angelfish, and many South American species prefer softer, more acidic conditions
  • Neutral to slightly alkaline (7.0–7.6) — most community fish, goldfish, and the majority of aquarium plants thrive here
  • Alkaline water (above 7.6) — livebearers such as mollies and guppies, and African cichlids, prefer harder, more alkaline conditions
  • Saltwater tanks — marine aquariums typically require a stable pH between 8.1 and 8.3
What causes pH to change

In an aquarium, pH is not static — it shifts over time in response to several factors:

  • CO₂ levels — carbon dioxide dissolves in water to form carbonic acid, which lowers pH. In a heavily planted tank or one with a high fish load, CO₂ buildup can cause pH to drop, especially overnight when plants consume oxygen rather than produce it
  • Biological activity — the nitrogen cycle produces acids as a byproduct, gradually lowering pH over time in an established tank
  • Tap water variability — municipal water pH can vary seasonally, introducing unexpected shifts during water changes
  • Substrate and decor — limestone, coral, and crushed coral raise pH; driftwood and peat lower it
  • Evaporation — as water evaporates, dissolved minerals concentrate, pushing pH upward
Testing and target levels

Test pH weekly — more frequently than some other parameters, but worth it given how much pH influences the toxicity of other compounds in your water. Use a reliable test kit at the same time of day each time, since pH can fluctuate naturally throughout the day, particularly in planted tanks. Logging your readings over time helps catch slow shifts before they become a problem.

Adjusting pH

Make changes gradually. A shift of more than 0.2 per day is generally considered stressful for fish. Avoid chasing a perfect number — consistency matters more than hitting an exact target.
