Overview

Bactershield® is a bio-adhesive supplement repairs and strengthens the fish’s natural slime coat which protects against bacterial and fungal infections. Proven natural oils and extracts are combined with a patented film-forming matrix to help repair and strengthen a fish’s natural slime coat and help provide a protective shield around your fish. A fish’s slime coat acts as the first line of defense for fish against bacterial and fungal infections.

Active Ingredients: Chitosan, Cinnamon Oil, D-Limonene, Geranium Oil, Pine Oil, Rosemary Oil

Indications

Use Bactershield® as a preventative treatment after stressful events or for mild cases of common bacterial and fungal diseases such as fin and tail rot, popeye, body, mouth, or eye fungus, or gill disease.

Consult a veterinarian or fish expert for assistance in diagnosis of disease-causing organisms and treatment options.
All suspected bacterial infections should be treated immediately.

Common symptoms

Symptoms of possible bacterial infection can include visible spots, clamped fins, flashing or scratching, patchy coloration, change in swimming behavior or corner-hiding.

Fin and tail rot

Small white spots may cover the entire body; fish may rub or scratch against bottom

Cloudy eye / popeye

Greyish-white stringy material covering most of the body; white or gray patches.

Columnaris "Body Fungus"

Extra mucus, visible spots or worms, flashing, scratching or rubbing on rocks

Preparations & Directions

Preparations
  • Shake well before using
  • Remove carbon filtration and stop use of skimmer (if present) during treatment.
  • Maintain aeration and water flow.
  • For best results, increase water temperature to 80°–84° F (27°–29° C)
  • Do not perform water changes during the treatment.

Bactershield® may inhibit nitrifying bacteria. If ammonia or nitrite is a concern, detoxify during treatment with Fritz A.C.C.R. or Fritz Complete.

Directions
  • Add 1 mL per 5 gallons (19 L) -or- 5 mL (1 tsp) per 25 gallons (95 L) of water to be treated.
  • Treat every other day for a total of 3 treatments over 5 days.
Directions for reef tanks / invertebrates
  • Add 0.5 mL per 5 gallons -or- 2.5 mL per 25 gallons (95 L).

  • Repeat dose 12 hours apart.

  • Treat every other day (twice per treatment day) for a total of 6 treatments over 5 days.

After treatment
  • Perform a 25% water change if needed.

  • Repeat full treatment if symptoms improve, but have not completely disappeared.

Notes

  • Do not exceed recommended dosage.

  • During use, some sessile invertebrates will temporarily retract for the first several hours.

    *This product has been tested on Stone Polyp, Brain Favites, Mushroom (Rhodactis), Ricordea sp., Favia fragum, Plate Coral sp., Tubastraea sp., Knobby Leather sp., Acropora sp., Finger Coral (Porites) coral species. All corals and polyps may not react the same way as the test species.

  • Bactershield® may cause excessive foam production in protein skimmers or tanks with airstones. Stop use of skimmer during treatment if excessive foaming is a concern.

  • UV Sterilizer can be used during treatment.

  • Always complete a full course of treatment, even if symptoms improve or disappear before the fifth dose
