Overview

Testing your aquarium’s water parameters regularly is an important part of keeping and maintaining a healthy environment for your fish and invertebrates. Fritz Nitrite Test kit is a liquid-reagent-based test that accurately measures nitrite levels in both saltwater and freshwater aquariums. The kit contains the required reagent for up to 180 tests, a test tube and instruction card with test color chart.

Why test for nitrite?

Nitrite (NO₂⁻) is a toxic compound found in aquariums, formed as a result of the breakdown of organic waste, including uneaten food, fish waste, and decaying plant matter. It is produced during the nitrogen cycle and, while less harmful than ammonia, can still cause stress, respiratory distress, and death in fish and other aquatic life. Addressing elevated nitrite levels quickly is critical to protecting aquarium inhabitants.

Regular testing is essential to catch nitrite spikes before they cause harm. In a healthy, fully cycled aquarium, nitrite should read 0 ppm — any detectable level above 0.5 ppm in freshwater or above 0.1 ppm in saltwater warrants immediate action, depending on the specific types of fish and other organisms present. If levels are elevated, partial water changes and reduced feeding can help lower them. Adding FritzZyme nitrifying bacteria can also accelerate the conversion of nitrite to nitrate, reducing nitrite levels and supporting a healthier environment for aquarium inhabitants.

Nitrite and the nitrogen cycle

Nitrite (NO₂⁻) is the middle step in the nitrogen cycle. Monitoring nitrite levels shows where you are in the cycling process. Rising levels indicate the cycle is progressing, while falling levels signal it is nearing completion. However, if an established tank begins to experience rising nitrite levels, it could be a sign that the nitrifying bacteria population (biofilter) can’t keep up and may benefit from adding FritzZyme 7 or 9.

Ammonia comes from fish waste, uneaten food and other decaying organic matter.

The bio filter (nitrifying bacteria) converts toxic ammonia to less toxic nitrite then to even-less harmful nitrate.

Nitrates are removed by regular water changes or consumed by live plants.

Directions

To remove childproof safety cap, push down while turning.

Fill a clean test tube with 5 ml of water to be tested (to the line on the tube).

Add 5 drops from Nitrite Test Solution, holding dropper bottle upside down in a completely vertical position to ensure uniformity of drops added to the water sample.

Cap the test tube and gently shake several times to mix solution. Always use the cap. Avoid skin contact as this may affect the test results.​

Cap the test tube and shake for one minute. This step is extremely important to ensure accuracy of test results.

Wait five minutes for the color to develop.

Read the test results by matching the color of the solution against the color chart.​

Rinse the test tube with clean water after each use.​

DO NOT allow test solution to get into aquarium. Read and follow all precautions on the product label.

About your test results

The nitrite level in an established tank should ideally be 0 ppm

For most freshwater aquariums, a level above 0.5 ppm warrants immediate action.

For most saltwater aquariums, a level above 0.1 ppm warrants immediate action.

High Nitrite levels may cause fish stress and water quality issues​

Ways to reduce nitrite

  • Reduce feeding temporarily if any nitrite is detected
  • If nitrite is above 0.5 ppm, perform a 25% water change
  • Treat replacement water with FritzGuard water conditioner to greatly reduce fish stress and the chance of infection. For best results, add Fritz nitrifying bacteria to naturally reduce toxic ammonia and nitrite quickly.
